Walking Safety Tips

Walking is a great low-impact exercise.  It’s free, it can be done anywhere, and it can really help burn off the calories.  So, while it’s important to make sure you have the right workout clothes and sneakers for your daily jaunt, it’s equally as important that you know how to stay safe while out there walking.  Before you lace up, take a look at the safety tips below so that you not only have a great walk, but come home safely, as well.

Stay Safe While Walking

Walking Direction

Have you ever spent anytime thinking about the direction you’re going?  Sure, you probably have an end destination or turn around point in mind when you head out, but what direction are you walking?  If you’re not heading in the opposite direction of traffic, stop, turn around, and start over.  It sounds simple, but walking on the sidewalk against the direction of traffic is actually a fantastic way to stay safe.  Can you see cars veering off the road and heading for you if they’re behind you?  Nope! Simply walking in the opposite direction of traffic gives you a better line of sight and makes you much more aware of oncoming traffic.

You’re So Bright!

Brightly colored, reflective clothes are a must when you’re walking outdoors.  Obviously, you can tone it down while inside on the treadmill, but outdoor walking requires to let loose your inner bold diva.  Wear colors that stand out and make drivers aware of your presence.  If you’re walking in the morning or in the evening, make sure that clothing also has some reflective qualities.  You can purchase [easyazon_link identifier=”B0041QW016″ locale=”US” tag=”mamaexercises-20″]reflective tape[/easyazon_link] to put on your clothes too.  The bolder, the better, friends!

Wet Your Whistle

Loud noises not only alert neighbors that something is wrong, they can also deter those who might intend to do you harm.  Carry a [easyazon_link identifier=”B009EWIQ7E” locale=”US” tag=”mamaexercises-20″]whistle[/easyazon_link] and don’t be afraid to use it.  If you live in a state where you can legally carry pepper spray or a stun gun, consider those, as well.  Does it sound extreme? Maybe.  But you know what really sounds extreme?  Being assaulted.  Be safe.

Fun in Pairs

Instead of heading out for a walk alone, bring a buddy! The old adage that there is safety in numbers is true, so grab your BFF and head out for some exercise.  If you can’t bring someone with you, always let someone know where you’re going and how long you think you’ll be.

Keep it Down

Lower the volume on your earbuds or don’t wear them at all.  One of the best ways to stay safe is to be aware of your surroundings.  If you’re blasting your music, the odds of you hearing someone approaching are slim to none.  Try walking without headphones or put an earbud in only one ear if you simply must have your music.

Staying safe while walking isn’t rocket science, but it does require a certain amount of awareness of the world around you.  Yes, exercise is great, but having you stay safe and return to your family and friends after exercising is even better.  Carry your cell phone if there’s an emergency, and if you get that feeling that something isn’t right, pay attention to it. Now, go have an amazing (and safe!) walk!
