When shopping for exercise bands, not all are created equal. In fact, if you’ve ever shopped for a resistance band, chances are that you’ve noticed that they come in different colors. No, friends, those colors aren’t just for fashion or to match your workout outfits, they actually indicate the resistance of the bands. And just fyi, I totally used to choose them based on color preference before I knew the colors actually meant something. Ha!
So what do those exercise band colors mean? Let’s break it down.
Exercise Band Colors
Keep in mind that band colors can vary by manufacturer, so be sure to read the description on the packaging before purchasing!
Yellow
[easyazon_link identifier=”B00GVLJLTI” locale=”US” tag=”mamaexercises-20″]Yellow bands[/easyazon_link] are great for beginners. They offer light resistance and are very stretchy. They’re a great way to break into the world of resistance bands when you’re just beginning your exercise journey.
Green
If you’re looking for a step up from the beginner yellow bands, [easyazon_link identifier=”B0000AV8KI” locale=”US” tag=”mamaexercises-20″]green resistance bands[/easyazon_link] are your next step. They offer medium resistance and are not quite as stretchy as the yellow bands. If you could only start with one exercise band, a green one is the way to go.
Red
After you’ve been exercising for a few months and are ready to try something more challenging, go with a [easyazon_link identifier=”B00067E4P4″ locale=”US” tag=”mamaexercises-20″]red band[/easyazon_link]. These bands offer medium to heavy resistance and are my personal favorites.
Blue
Looking for heavy resistance with your resistance band? Grab a [easyazon_link identifier=”B00169ZHKM” locale=”US” tag=”mamaexercises-20″]blue[/easyazon_link] one! They’re harder to pull and require quite a bit of strength compared to their less intense counterparts.
Black
For the heaviest resistance, a [easyazon_link identifier=”B016J1NDHK” locale=”US” tag=”mamaexercises-20″]black exercise band[/easyazon_link] is the one you’re after. They are the hardest to stretch and pull which will give you a great workout, but also makes that workout quite a bit more challenging than one done with a green or red band.
Whenever you’re working with a resistance band, be sure to inspect it prior to starting to exercise. Cats and kids have been known to poke holes in them which can lead to painful resistance band snap backs. I have had the welts and bruises to prove it! As always, safety first no matter what type of exercise equipment you’re using.
Not sure if you need a resistance band if you’re working out at home? Here’s what I recommend having on hand for home workouts.
