Learn to Love Salad

Okay, so you may not need to love salad, but you should always eat something healthy like a salad or small appetizer before your main meal. This will keep your stomach full with something a little healthier so that you’re not overeating during the main course at a holiday gathering.

Load up on that veggie tray but skip the fatty dip.

Staying Hydrated Curbs Overeating

Whether you believe it or not, water can keep you feeling full longer. I highly recommend you bring your own refillable water bottle to all holiday gatherings. You could even invest in a fruit infused water bottle to add some flavor to your water.

Obviously, you might want to leave it behind for the swanky company holiday party, but keep your glass filled with water to sip on throughout the night. You’ll stay full, hydrated, and you won’t have a hangover in the morning.

Get Sleep

People who don’t get adequate sleep tend to crave high-calorie foods. When I don’t sleep well, I know that my mind goes straight to processed carbs. Unless you’re running a marathon or doing some super-intense workouts this season, you probably don’t need to carb load, so just get some sleep.

Ideally, try to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night so that you won’t be craving those high-calorie foods during holiday festivities.

Don’t Wear Comfy Clothes – Wait, What?!

Let’s face it; wearing comfy clothes is something we all swear by when it comes to holiday gatherings. This helps us overeat and have room for that extra bloat. I want to challenge you to do something different this year, don’t wear comfy clothes!

Keep the stretchy pants in the closet and pull out the jeans you have to squeeze into a bit. Not only will it help reduce the risk of overeating, but you’ll appreciate the comfy clothes even more when you get home.

Be Mindful of Your Eating (or Overeating!) Habits

If you know there are certain foods you simply must indulge in during the holiday season, then allow yourself to have a small serving. There’s nothing saying you cannot enjoy your favorite holiday desserts or sides, simply be more mindful of the portion size.

A whole pie? Probably not a good choice. A small slice? A much better option for sure.

While the tips above won’t stop you from overeating, they can be a steppingstone to have more self-control at your next holiday gathering. We are all guilty of overeating during the holidays at one point or another but being mindful of our habits will make it much easier to control unnecessary weight gain.
