Learn how to calm yourself down when life gets stressful!
How to Calm Yourself Down
Stress comes in different forms and from various sources. While it is, to be brutally honest, inescapable, there are actually some ways to prevent yourself from being consumed by it.
Raise your hand high if that sounds like something you need too!
Read on, because here are six actionable and straightforward steps to calm yourself down when you’re feeling out of control.
Take a Time Out
Taking a break is essential, and even more so when you’re feeling overwhelmed. The next time you do, just distract yourself with something else – even something menial.
Catch a movie or read a couple of chapters of a good book (here’s what I’m reading now) or just stroll through the neighborhood on your own.
Give yourself a couple of hours to recharge and get back to feeling calm.
Walk Barefoot On the Grass
Taking a walk outside, or even just getting out for that matter, can be another incredible way to blow off some steam, release endorphins into your body, and get you in just the right frame of mind.
If you can, take a short walk on the grass, preferably barefoot. Doing this can get you more grounded and centered and less likely to feel overwhelmed with all the emotions that are threatening to bubble over.

Take a Warm Bath
Speaking of bubbling over, never underestimate the power of a nice, warm bath. Whether it’s a long tiring day at work or just a stressful situation you’re confused about, take a shower or soak in a warm bath for a few minutes.
This can be an excellent natural way to feel more relaxed, and you can double up the power by adding a drop of a calming essential oil (think lavender or chamomile) into it!
Breathe Deeply
If there’s one single and incredibly simple way to stop feeling overwhelmed, it is this! Each breath gets more oxygen into your body and releases the physical tension out.
Regardless of where you are, just pause and take a few deep, conscious breaths, and you’ll notice how much better you start feeling.
If you practice yoga, you know how grounding and calming deep breathing can be. Give it a try!
Be Thankful, Mindfully
One of the best ways to start feeling better and more relaxed instantly is by practicing mindfulness in your daily life, especially when it comes to being thankful.
Whether you realize it or not, you have a LOT to be thankful for in your life. And once you consciously move your attention to those things, you’ll understand how much less stressed you really need to be.
Take a Nap
Guess what? Things actually look different when you look at them after a short nap.
Think of a nap as your mini-escape, especially when you’re feeling stressed out and overwhelmed.
Just a short 20-minute nap can instantly boost your mood, calm you down and even make you feel more productive and energetic.
You Have the Power to Calm Yourself Down
The most important thing to remember when you feel like things are out of control is that you have the power to calm yourself down. No one else can do it for you. Everything you need is in your power and you have the ultimate control over your ability to breathe, slow down, and tend to your self-care.
Take a deep breath, friend, you can do this.
